BCCI Announces the Format and IPL 2022 Date

IPL 2022 Date

IPL governing body that is BCCI held a meeting on 24 Feb and made some key decisions regarding the TATA IPL 2022 date. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-bubble environment in a single state to avoid air travel which is the biggest threat to the spread of Covid-19, thereby it may affect the players and the League.

The BCCI announced that the league will commence on 26th March and the final will be played on 29th May 2022

Format of IPL 2022

As two new teams were added to the league the IPL governing body decided to change the format of the league and a new format was announced according to which:

A total of 74 matches will be played among which 70 matches will be played in the league stage and the remaining 4 will be played in the playoff. Each team will play a total of 14 league stage matches including 7 home matches and 7 away.

To decide on the above, the teams have been divided into two groups based on the number of IPL champion titles won followed by the number of final matches played by the respective teams.

Following is a table showing the groups divided by BCCI for IPL 2022

Group A

Group B

Mumbai Indians

Chennai Super Kings

Kolkata Knight Riders

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Rajasthan Royals

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Delhi Capitals

Punjab Kings

Lucknow Super Giants

Gujarat Titans

Each team will play two matches with the teams in their respective group and two matches with the teams in the same row in another group. Therefore, each team will then play only one match with the four teams remaining teams in the other group.

For example: in Group A, Mumbai Indians will play two matches in their group and will also play two matches against Chennai Super Kings and one match each against the remaining teams in Group B.

Similarly, in Group B, Royal Challengers Bangalore will play two matches against their group and will also play two matches against Rajasthan Royals and one match each against the remaining teams in Group A.

To avoid the last season’s situation where IPL was paused the mid-way due to the breach of bio-bubble. BCCI officials announced that IPL 2022 will be conducted in one state so that players can avoid air travel and make sure that players are safe.
