Highest bids on an individual in IPL auctions – 2008-2022

MS Dhoni IPL auctions in 2008:

The former Indian skipper led the team to the 2007 T20 World Cup title and thus began his upward journey towards the peak of his popularity. Chennai Super Kings had bagged him for Rs 9.5 crores, which was comparatively high according to the present times.

Dhoni was the highest-bid player of the IPL auction in that season and the player people looked up to because of his brilliance in white-ball captaincy and being the type of batsman who can pull off miracles even in the last moment.

Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff (2009):

Dhoni could not hold his place as the highest-bid player with the arrival of the England duo Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff. Pietersen was grabbed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Flintoff by Dhoni’s team Chennai Super Kings. RCB threw Rs 9.8 crores in IPL auctions for Pietersen and the same for Flintoff by CSK. Unfortunately, Flintoff was ruled out of IPL due to an injury and could only play 3 matches in his IPL stint.

Shane Bond, Kieron Pollard (2010):

The pace King Shane Bond of New Zealand was purchased over by Kolkata Knight Riders for 4.8 crores while the long-term association of Kieron Pollard with Mumbai Indians made them purchase him again for the same amount as Bond.

Gautam Gambhir (2011):

Gambhir was the first player to break the 10 crore record by getting bought for 14.9 crores. KKR decided to rip off their purse and spend it on him as he was at the peak of his career as an opener for the Indian team. He was an integral part of India’s World Cup win that year. Gambhir was a great addition to the KKR team as he had managed to score a lot of runs and also paved their way to the title win twice.

Ravindra Jadeja (2012):

The Gujarati all-rounder was at the early stage of his career but CSK realized the potential of the young player and understood the value that he brings to the team as an all-rounder. CSK pulled out Rs 12.8 crores and made him a significant and core part of the squad since then.

Glenn Maxwell (2013):

The Australian player was bagged by Mumbai Indians for Rs 6.3 crores from the mini-auction but did not last in the team for more than one season. It was a temporary stint for Glenn Maxwell at Mumbai Indians.

Yuvraj Singh (2014):

Gambhir’s highest-bid record was broken nearly by Royal Challengers Bangalore. They paid Rs 14 crores for the left-handed hard hitter in the auction. But the excitement around him lasted only one season as he was released after a string of modest outings.

Yuvraj Singh (2015):

Regardless of having a modest IPL season in the previous year, Delhi Daredevils spent a record amount of Rs 16 crores for Yuvraj Singh. Though Yuvraj had a not-so-great season in 2014, some strange calculations by Delhi Daredevils made them rip their purse off for him. The price at which Yuvraj was sold, stood as a record for 6 years straight after 2015.

Shane Watson (2016):

The Royal Challengers Bangalore had spent Rs 9.5 crores on the Australian all-rounder Shane Watson. Unfortunately, the bid did not work well for RCB and was later sold to Chennai Super Kings in the next season where he outshined what he had done in RCB.

Ben Stokes (2017):

Ben Stokes was the highest bid in the year 2017 as he was sold to the Rising Pune Supergiants for Rs 14.5 crores. The English all-rounder was at his peak during 2017 and did well for the IPL franchise he played for. But he only lasted for one season in the team.

Ben Stokes (2018):

Ben Stokes was then associated with Rajasthan Royals after leaving the Rising Pune Supergiants in 2018. The English all-rounder was sold for another burly deal of Rs 12.5 crores making him one of the richest IPL players.

Jaydev Unadkat, Varun Chakravarthy (2019):

This season was the season that broke the conventional format of IPL in which only big names were sold for huge prices. Two rookie players, Jaydev Unadkat and Varun Chakravarthy bagged the highest bid quoting Rs 8.4 crore each. IPL giants Rajasthan Royals purchased Unadkat and Kolkata Knight Riders purchased Varun Chakravarthy.

Pat Cummins (2020):

Kolkata Knight Riders purchased for the Australian fast bowler for the highest bid of that year that is, Rs 15.5 crores. Cummins performed well for them that season and made himself worthy of the money that they had bid for him.

Chris Morris (2021):

The South-African all-rounder became the costliest player in the IPL 2021 against everyone’s expectations. Rajasthan Royals threw everyone’s expectations in the river by bidding for Rs 16.25 crores for Chris Morris. This was the year when Yuvraj’s record bid was broken.

Ishan Kishan (2022):

Ishan Kishan, the young star became the costliest player in the IPL auctions 2022 with a value of Rs 15.25 crores. He was sold to Mumbai Indians along with other expensive players of the season.
