One of the most prosperous teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the Mumbai Indians. They have five titles to their name: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2017. The Champions League T20 was also won twice by the Mumbai Indians, in 2011 and 2013. The Mumbai Indians had a slow start to the IPL in its early years, but under Captain Rohit Sharma, they turned things around in 2013 and went on to win the IPL twice in 2015 and 2016. With a disastrous season in 2022 and a fifth-place finish in 2021, the team’s recent results have been inconsistent.

Mumbai Indians IPL Timeline
Mumbai has participated in every IPL season since its inception in 2008. Legends like Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, and Lasith Malinga were acquired by MI before the first season. But in the early years of the T20 league, Mumbai struggled to have much of an impact despite having a strong squad.
Mumbai reached the final in 2010 after losing the first two editions in the league stage. They lost the final match to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by a score of 22 runs, though, and came in second place overall. Mumbai’s fortunes turned around in 2013 when they won their first IPL title under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. This time, MI beat CSK by 23 runs thanks to a fifty-six-run blowout from Kieron Pollard in just 32 balls.
MI, A Force to Be Reckoned With
The Mumbai Indians then rose to prominence in the lucrative Twenty20 league. They won the title in 2015 after defeating CSK by 41 runs once more. Rohit took the lead early on, hitting 50 off just 26 balls. Mumbai won their third IPL title in 2017 after a thrilling final in which they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by a single run. Krunal Pandya, an all-rounder, was the star of a low-scoring summit match with 47 off 38. Mitchell Johnson was outstanding with the ball, going 3/26.
Mumbai also made history by being the first and only team to win the IPL in back-to-back seasons. They defeated CSK by one run in a thrilling last-ball match in 2019. To end the game, Malinga famously trapped Shardul Thakur with a slower ball yorker.
A Dull Last Two Seasons for MI
The Mumbai Indians’ past two seasons have not been particularly noteworthy. In 2021, they came in fifth place. In order to prepare for the massive auction in 2022, MI was forced to release the majority of its players and assemble its team virtually from scratch. They finished 10th out of 10 teams, having had a terrible season.
Among the IPL franchises, MI was the first team to surpass the $100 million threshold in brand value in 2017. The Economic Times reported that MI’s brand value was projected to be approximately ₹809 crore ($115 million) in 2019.
