Mumbai Indians are a cricket team franchise based in Mumbai as the name suggests. Established in the year 2008, the team’s ownership lies with India’s biggest agglomerate, Reliance Industries. The team plays their home matches in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Mumbai Indians became the first franchise to cross the 100 million dollars in brand value among the other IPL franchises. The estimated brand value of the franchise is to be around Rs 809 crores making it one of the most expensive franchises in the league.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar became the icon player of Mumbai Indians. Apart from Sachin, they purchased legendary cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga, and Robin Uthappa. Sachin became the captain of the franchise in the inaugural season. Harbhajan Singh was suspended due to an incident in which he slapped Sreesanth during a game. They finished fifth in the season by missing the semi-final spot by just one point.
Before the start of the 2009 season, Mumbai Indians traded Robin Uthappa for Zaheer Khan with Royal challengers Bangalore and Ashish Nehra for Shikhar Dhawan with Delhi Daredevils. Mumbai Indians relied heavily on Tendulkar’s and Duminy’s batting along with the deadly Yorkers of Malinga. However, they finished in seventh place in the league table.
The franchise purchased Trinidadian all-rounder Kieron Pollard for 750000 dollars at the 2010 auction. They won three of the six league games with 20 points from 14 games at the top of the points table. They beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the semi-final and at the final Chennai Super Kings defeated them by 22 runs.
In 2011, Mumbai Indians maintained the retention rate as per the rules of the IPL governing council. Tendulkar, Harbhajan, Pollard, and Malinga were retained for a sum of 4.5 million dollars. They were eliminated in the group stage with two wins and two defeats in four matches.
The Indians traded Dinesh Karthik from Kings XI Punjab and Pragyan Ojha from the Deccan Chargers. Tendulkar stepped down from the captaincy soon before the season commenced. Mumbai finished third on the point table with 20 points from 16 matches and got into the qualifiers against Chennai Super Kings at Bangalore. Mumbai lost the match by 38 runs.
In the year 2013, Mumbai Indians started their season by losing a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The finals took place in the Eden Gardens between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Mumbai won the toss and chose to bat. The chase did not work well for Chennai and lost the match by 23 runs in the final.
The matches took place in the UAE during 2014. The start was not great at all for Mumbai as they lost 5 of their matches against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Daredevils by huge margins. They lost against Chennai in the eliminator which put an end to their 2014 IPL campaign.
Though they faced a defeat in the 2014 campaign, Mumbai made a strong comeback in the 2015 season by defeating the Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs.
Bowlers like Tim Southee, Nathu Singh, Jos Buttler, Jitesh Sharma, KP Kamath, Deepak Punia, and Krunal Pandya made it into the Mumbai Indians team during the IPL 2016 auction. Despite having such a huge star-packed team, Mumbai finished the season in the fifth spot in the points table.
IPL 2017 was the year for Mumbai to win the trophy again, and they succeeded by beating Rising Pune Supergiant in a thrilling finish which is considered as one of the best IPL matches in the history of IPL. Mumbai secured their 3rd IPL title and became the most successful franchise in IPL history.
Mumbai Indians finished the season in the fifth position after winning 6 matches and losing 8 matches.
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians came face to face in the final where Mumbai defeated Chennai and became the title winners of the IPL for the record 4th time. The audience witnessed a match like none other. Mumbai became the team with the most IPL titles.
They added 6 more new members to the squad is Nathan Coulter-Nile, Saurabh Tiwary, Digvijay Deshmukh, Balwant Rai Singh, Mohsin Khan, and Chris Lynn in the IPL 2020 auction. The IPL 2020 took place in the UAE due to Covid restrictions. Mumbai lifted the title for the fifth time becoming the season’s most successful team.
Despite winning the fifth title in the previous season, Mumbai finished 5th in the table with 14 points, 7 wins, and 7 losses.
The rivalry between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings is something that even the kids are aware of. The rivalry is also known as the El Clasico of the IPL. The two teams have locked horns together 32 times, however, Chennai has a record over Mumbai by 20 wins. These two franchises are the most successful team in the Ipl history. They have 9 titles combined out of the fourteen IPL seasons.

One of their best buys around all the seasons was when they purchased Kieron Pollard for 750000 after a silent tie-breaker with Chennai Super Kings in the 2010 IPL auctions.
