Hand and foot card game is one of the common card games that is played in a Rummy style. The game seems to be very much related to the Canasta and Pennies from heaven games. The hand and foot card game includes the melding of cards but has no proper rules. Therefore, there are many various variations of rules and regulations of this game.

How to play the Hand and Foot Card Game?

The gameplay starts with the player sitting left to the dealer. At the beginning of the game, the players must either discard the pile or take a card from the stock. To pick a card from the discard pile. The first card must either start meld or be made upon one already made. If a player picks from the discard pile, a player must pick all of the cards in the discard pile. At the end of that particular player’s turn, the player must discard one card.

Melding in Hand and Foot card games

The players try to meld cards and get out of the cards first from the hand and then the foot. To meld the cards, players can form a set of 3-7 cards of the same rank and keep them face up. The meld must not have less than 3 or 7 cards. Moreover, a meld is not owned by a particular player but collectively represents the team. A Book or a Closed Pile is formed when the players make a meld of up to seven cards. Players can also use jokers to form melds along with 4 natural cards, not including the red and black 3s.

Types of Melds:

The Hand and card games have 4 types of melds. Below we have explained them in brief.

Clean or natural meld: a meld of seven cards of the same rank is known as a clean or natural meld.

Wild or Dirty meld: a wild meld includes a minimum of 4 same rank cards and at least one wild card is known as a wild meld or dirty meld. For instance, five 8s and two wild cards.

Red Book: Red book consists of all the natural cards and doesn’t include wild cards.

Black Book: A Black book will have at least 4 natural cards and also includes wild cards.

Scoring in Hand and Foot Card Game

After a player gets out the round comes to an end, and the scores are given as follows:

  • Wild card books made from jokers and 2s give 1500 points
  • Red books give 500 points
  • Black books give 300 points
  • Jokers (wild cards) give 50 points
  • Aces are valued at 20 points
  • Deuces (wild cards) are valued at 20 points
  • Eight through kings are valued at 10 points
  • Fours through sevens give 5 points
  • Black threes are worth 5 points
  • Red threes are valued at 100 points
  • Going out will give players 100 points

The points from the team’s remaining cards in hands are subtracted from the points of the cards played by the team to reach the score.

Rules of Hand and Foot Card Game

  • A team cannot have two insufficient melds of the same rank.
  • A meld must have more natural cards than wild cards at any time.
  • Players cannot move wildcards once they are melded
  • A meld should have at least 3 cards
  • A meld cannot exceed more than seven cards.
  • Black 3s can be used to block the discard pile. That is why they cannot be melded.
